Originally the seat of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Bernicia, Bamburgh’s story begins in the 6th century when King Ida established it as a royal citadel. Known then as Din Guarie, it became a centre of early medieval power, later fortified by Normans and expanded through the centuries. In 1464, it earned a grim distinction as the first English castle to fall to cannon fire during the Wars of the Roses.

Industrialist William Armstrong restored the castle in the 19th century, transforming it into the stately home seen today — complete with Victorian interiors, archaeological treasures, and sweeping views that stretch from Holy Island to the Farne Islands.
